Monday, September 21st, 2009

steam-trainTrains in Morocco are efficient and comfortable and the fares cheap. The long distance ones have air-conditioning, comfy seats and a trolley service with food and drinks.

The railways links Tangier, Meknes, Fes, Oujda, Rabat, Casablanca and Marrakech. Agadir and Essaouira have no railway station but are linked to Marrakech by bus.

You cannot make reservation or purchase a ticket from outside Morocco.

For schedules and fares visit the ONFC (the Moroccan national train service) website at www.oncf.ma

Morocco Ramadan 2009

Saturday, August 22nd, 2009

Ramadan, the Muslim festival of fasting – the most important event in the Islamic Calendar – started in Morocco today. The arrival of the crescent moon in the night sky signals the start of 30 days of fasting during which Muslims don’t eat, drink or smoke during the day, eating all their meals before sunrise and after sunset.

Fasting is one of the pillars of the Islamic faith and reminds Muslims of the plight of the poor, sick and needy. Eid al-Fitr marks the end of the 30-day fasting period and is a great celebration throughout the Muslim world. Morocco is one of the last countries in the world that relies on actual sightings rather than a lunar calendar when working out its Ramadan dates…which means one can never be exactly sure when it’s going to start and finish.

Those of you with any experience of the country will immediately recognise how typically Moroccan this is…a big “Ramadan Mubarak” to all our friends!

School report

Sunday, May 10th, 2009

In recent years Morocco has embarked on a programme to improve the literacy of its rural population. Many children in the countryside come from extremely poor families, and need to walk several kilometres a day to reach the nearest school. Economic pressures can force families to push their children towards tasks like goat herding, rather than persevering with their education – especially when rainfall is low and the harvests bad. So drop-out rates are high.

We are now collecting books and other resources (paper, pens, footballs etc) to donate to a school about 20km inland of Essaouira for the 2009/10 academic year. If you’re interested in helping, please get in touch.
